This royal throne of kings, this sceptred isle,
This earth of majesty, this seat of Mars,
This other Eden, demi-paradise,
This fortress built by Nature for herself
Against infection and the hand of war,
This happy breed of men, this little world,
This precious stone set in the silver sea,
Which serves it in the office of a wall […]
This blessed plot, this earth, this realm, this England […].

Cet auguste trône de rois, cette île porte-sceptre, cette terre de Majesté, ce siège de Mars, cet autre Éden, ce demi-paradis, cette forteresse bâtie par la nature pour se défendre contre l’invasion et le coup de main de la guerre, cette heureuse race d’hommes, ce petit univers, cette pierre précieuse enchâssée dans une mer d’argent qui la défend, comme un rempart, […] ce lieu béni, cette terre, cet empire, cette Angleterre […].
